Hello! My name is Tom, and welcome to Sunset Rail Multimedia, my own personal brand of railfan media I create in my spare time for viewers such as yourself to enjoy.
Being both a railfan and a railroader, my love of the railroad industry is a way of life for me, being both my hobby and my job. I've loved trains since I was a child, and in my adult life I continue to expand my knowledge and interests of freight transportation as I gain real world experience.
I love to take photographs and record videos to capture the world as I see it, so naturally these two passions of mine had to collide. When I was a freshman in highschool I began recording amateur railroad videos, and my art has been evolving ever since.
Within the last year I've allowed my love of music and vinyl records to seep into this passion project of mine. My goal is to capture what I experience on my railroad adventures, creating a flavorful and unique railfan experience through the lenses of my cameras.

Summer's day on the Lakewood Subdivision: Tacoma Rail, Amtrak, & Sounder
As the heat of 2023's Summer Season set in for the next few months, I decided it was time to revisit the Lakewood Subdivision, an all-time railroad favorite of mine mainly because of my humble beginnings as a teen, living down the street from the tracks in South Lakewood. As always, Tacoma Rail's DuPont turn was the main event for me, and I decided to camp out at Steilacoom Blvd to wait for them to finish working on South Tacoma before rolling down the line to Lakewood Industrial Park.
I ended up walking down the right-of-way to check out a disused spur and loading dock once served by BNSF and Tacoma Rail, having being severed from the mainline and separated by a drainage ditch in 2011, during the construction for Sounder's Lakewood extension. Said spur can be seen in the frame with Amtrak 500.
After shooting Amtrak trains 11 and 500, as well as following Tacoma Rail through Lakewood Industrial Park, it was time for the 505 to roll through, with the sister Talgo 8 trainset and consecutively numbered P42DC to train 505. Tacoma Rail waited patiently next to Lakewood Station, and closely followed the southbound Amtrak train to clear the way for the Northbound 504 and impending Sounder rush.
While I was present for five Sounder trains during the evening commuter rush, I only shot three, and the third video clip is unusable. As far as Sounder goes, I have an in-depth Lakewood Sub shooting session planned for future, hopefully this coming summer, having been heavily requested by many viewers.
Amtrak 14, the Northbound Starlight, was a fitting end to the evening before I packed up and headed home, with two brand new phase-7 ALC42 chargers up front, flying by Steilacoom Boulevard at track speed.

Round trip on Portland & Western's Rock Train: Gravel and sand by rail in Western Oregon!
Переглядів 4196 місяців тому
Five days a week, Portland & Western Railroad hauls aggregate materials by rail for the construction giant Knife River Corporation. Loaded at the Salem sand & gravel facility, this train then ships the rock and sand to two different quarries further north on the P&W system, with Knife River's Coffee Lake Quarry in Tonquin being the most common unloading destination. After an unloading process t...

Always expect the unexpected on the railroad. While eating lunch near the Seattle Subdivision in Tacoma, on a day off with nothing to do, I hear the distant rumble of diesel engines towards Tacoma Yard. "Oh neat, let's see what this is." I think to myself. I watch the head end roll by and take note of the unusual locomotive consist. Both BNSF and Union Pacific run occasional grain shuttles to S...

In March of 2023, Amtrak's brand-new Siemens ALC42 Charger locomotives entered service on the Coast Starlight, and eventually will be fully replacing their GE P40/42DC predecessors. This video covers the first run on train 11, the Southbound Starlight, made by an ALC42. Painted in the beautiful new Phase 6 livery, AMTK 306 brought the train out of the City of Destiny and into the Nalley Valley ...
Portland & Western's 663/BN Hauler from Tulatin to Portland
Переглядів 700Рік тому
Portland & Western's 663/664, also known as the BN Hauler, is a run-through manifest train on the P&W system, making runs between Eugene, OR and Vancouver, WA, traversing various lines on the PNWR system such as the Oregon Election District and the Willsburg District. The train itself was a turn job operated by the BN/BNSF, as well as much of the territory the train operates on, mainly the form...
Grain train in the rain: PSAP Eastbound from Oakville to Centralia
Переглядів 292Рік тому
Sometimes it's the everyday things that make life fun. Rain or shine, the railroad is gonna run. There's raw materials and finished products to move up and down the lines and customers depending on those goods to get delivered. On most rainy days, like this one, train crews can be rest assured knowing there won't be too many foamers out and about, who's gonna come out in this shitty weather and...

Переглядів 357Рік тому
Here's the promised SSRM 2022 extras video! This video is comprised of material that didn't make the cut (or won't make the cut) for other standard SSRM videos. Lots of cool stuff is in here, such as freight locomotive power and AMTK 160 on the Empire Builder, BNSF's Sumas Turn, and chasing a 5-locomotive lash-up with a Warbonnet C44-9W on the Stampede subdivision! Timestamps for different trai...

Summertime Railroading in the Chehalis Valley [7/21/2021]
Переглядів 398Рік тому
The Chehalis Valley is one of Washington State's busiest and diverse railfanning spots, and if you play your cards right, some days you can get a little bit of everything. One got summer day in July of 2021 I was out with a friend who's gradually getting into the hobby. First taking him to see the Centralia-Chehalis Railroad & Museum's Summertime Tour train, we followed the next run, after our ...
Four morning trains at Downtown Edmonds, including a Sounder Extra [7/9/2022]
Переглядів 431Рік тому
While waiting for a family member to finish a music rehearsal in a nearby town, I drove down to the Edmonds Waterfront to see what trains I could shoot along the Scenic Sub. I ended up walking away with four, including a weekend Sounder run to transport people to the Mariner's game in Seattle, and the Westbound Empire Builder. Also included are two northbound BNSF freight trains, C-SXMRBC, and ...

That track is a horrible bottleneck if they double tracked the tunnel trains wouldn’t have to idle for hours and they could add a sounder service to Ruston and Steilacoom
Great video that. General signals type 1 electronic bell does not sound good at all.
i remember being in 103 that was nice
Excellent work!
Nice narration.
Its always a good day when SSRM and ATCP both upload. Cheers!
Well done! Very enjoyable.

Man i hate the city horns so awfuk and horrendous
I am retired off Union Pacific in Seattle. I used to go in there quite often, both delivering loads and pulling empties. The 'McCarver' side is much easier to work than the South side (railroad North - everything gets turned around right there due to topography). There are good ways to work the facility, and bad ways. One of the bad ways is to try and spot an entire train into the McCarver tracks from the Railroad North end, instead of taking it in 50-car cuts. Trying to tell that to an FNG conductor is like talking to a dog, except the dog at least wags its tail...
As someone who'll be a FNG conductor for UP out of Seattle here soon, I'll definitely take note! Advice from old head such as yourself is definitely needed. Thank you for taking the time to watch, and for your comment!
Sure glad to see this railroad back in operation. I do hope to visit in the future as they have quite an interesting collection of logging locomotives and a unique line in Washington state.
Great video
Cool video and channel just subscribed
Wow amazing production
Thank you for this excellent video. Those of us who were there at that 1st meeting in Jan 2023, when Bethan Maher presented the plans & the timeline for restoring the MRSR, could never have imagined having the #70 steam loco in operating & pulling trains this year, but an incredible staff & an army of tireless volunteers got it done. Many never would have believed it would be running weekends starting with Labor Day. On that day, those who bought tickets for the very first run were waiting at Elbe Depot, but where was the train? Well, on the way from the shops at Mineral they found a huge blockage of fallen trees on the tracks, & the start was delayed while the crew got a chainsaw & cleared the track. No obstacle was ever too great for this incredible crew! Your video is attribute to the tireless efforts of the staff & volunteers that got our railroad back in operation.
Thank you so much for your kind words, Steven.
This is really well-done!
Thanks Andrew! I try and put as much creativity essence and feel into my video hobby as possible.
Great documenting. Does their dock only hold two boxcars?
Hey, look! That's us! These are some super cool shots, thanks for taking the time to put this together!
Thank you for taking the time to watch! You guys are doing so well, and I love what's going out there in Mineral. The railroad needed some people like you guys with good heads on your shoulders! I also just watched your latest video surrounding the first operating day from the railroad's standpoint. Coming from a railfan perspective, I loved to see what was going on internally. Selling out the first operating season is fucking impressive, and it really says something about how you guys have approached this seemingly impossible task. Keep up the fantastic work guys!
Great job Tom! It really is a miracle that this heritage railroad is back in operation, wish I could say the same about the McCloud.
The unfortunate reality is that when it comes to railroads, we can't save them all. I prefer to celebrate ones worth saving, such as the MRSR. Thanks for watching!
Very nice! The sound of the whistle recorded from the SR706 crossing was pretty incredible.
Love the opening shot with the bee on the flowers, I've done a couple shots like that also, really cool and well done! Really cool angles on Bridge 14 and SunnySide, great video as always! Do ya know if they are done with the parking lot down there yet? That second lashup is AWESOME, so many classics and love 2092, I caught that in downtown Tacoma about a month ago, wonder if it's still roaming around this area? Great Video buddy! -Ken
Thanks Ken! I drove by the other day and the parking lot was still closed unfortunately...
Thanks for the intel, I thought it was suppose to be a 1 month project:) Hopefully it opens up soon, little Z loves that playground down there! Have a great night! -Ken@@SunsetRailMultimedia
Was great meeting you in person Tom! Great footage too!
Nice work!
Awesome catch on the BNSF manifest
Best video ever made

Really well done as always, love the low camera angles and the maps are a great idea, good stuff! -Ken
Excellent shunting action. Love it!
Cool Video! Lots of zooming trains! 👹🤣🥱☝️💗💗 I LOVE THE TRAINS, I LOVE THEM ALL!!! 👹👹🫠🤪😎👹😶🌫️🦅🇺🇸🇺🇸🦅🦅 NEVER FORGET 7/11 🇺🇸🦅🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Great video Tom! I liked the formating of it. Mood was great throughout as well. Nicely done.
Great great video So hard to find industrial switching with actual delivery and movement. Thx for sharing Looking forward to more. Live love the classic EMD power
Thank you! The old EMDs are really a treat :)
What is the union pacific subdivision here
The UP doesn't have their own rail line in Centralia, at least not anymore. They operate on BN and PSAP tracks to get their work done.
Safetran Type 3
Way back in the olden days when I was much younger, that large brick edifice was a furniture manufacturer. I remember seeing box cars on that siding not so long ago, no wait, that was probably 30 years ago. Time sure flys by!
Thanks for sharing John! The Willamette building might be my personal favorite in Tacoma.
Neat K5LLA horn
It's pretty cool to see on a little endcab! Thanks for watching.
What's the sound at 0:47?
That's called an Automatic Wayside Horn, it's supposed to provide a more localized warning to cut down on noise as opposed to the locomotive horn.
Great stuff!
Thank you! More is on the way...
Thanks for Sharing Do they store cars for extra revenue for building tracks buying or leasing more BNSF TRACKS ?..BE WONDERFUL IF THEY RESTORE A 1 MILE EX MILWAUKEE RAILWAY TRACKAGE TO MERIDIAN STREET FOR A TRANSLOADS FACILITIES (USING STATE OOF WASHINGTON STATE AND OREGON DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION TRANSLOADS FACILITIES GRANTS) TO INTERCHANGE WITH BNSF WITH CARS FOR PORT.
